What Does a Meta Ads Media Buyer Actually Do?
An illustrative week of launches, budget decisions and reporting, plus how to define responsibility for media buying and creative.
A Meta ads media buyer handles delivery, spend and decisions inside the ad account. They launch approved ads, monitor results, adjust budgets, evaluate losses and report what the team should test next. Creative production may be included or handled by another team, so define that responsibility in the scope.
The account they work inside
Meta Ads Manager has three levels, and every action a media buyer takes happens at one of them.
- The campaign sets the objective, such as Sales for an ecommerce campaign.
- The ad set sets the audience, the placements, and the schedule.
- The ad holds the creative itself: the video or image, the text, the link.
Budget can sit at campaign or ad set level. A campaign budget allocates across ad sets, while delivery among the ads can also be uneven. The buyer needs to read results with that allocation in mind, including which ads received too little evidence to judge.
An illustrative working week
Suppose a store has a $400 daily testing campaign and two ad sets with separate budgets. The week could include the following work.
| Day | The work |
|---|---|
| Monday | Review the weekend results and delivery. Two of six ads took most of the spend; evaluate their purchases and mark the others according to the evidence they received. Investigate an ad set whose CPA rose from $38 to $52 over two weeks, checking creative, customer mix, auction costs and site changes. |
| Tuesday | Launch the two new creatives the brand's team finished last week into the testing campaign. Fix a rejected ad, this week a policy flag on a before-and-after claim, by editing the line and resubmitting. |
| Wednesday | Review whether a promising ad warrants more budget, allowing for conversion lag and the agreed loss limit. Set the purpose of any separate ad set before moving it. |
| Thursday | Check month-to-date pacing. If the account is projected to exceed the agreed budget by $2,000, adjust the plan with the owner and record the change. Review the replacement creative against its actual results. |
| Friday | Send the founder the weekly update: what changed, why it changed, what it cost and returned in plain numbers, and what I need next. This week that is two more variations of the winning customer-story angle. |
The decisions depend on what the account shows. A rising CPA is a reason to investigate; it does not identify creative fatigue by itself. The weekly report should separate that observation from the explanation being tested.
What a media buyer does not do
The role has edges, and the providers you compare will draw them differently, so it is worth stating the common ones plainly. A media buyer does not build or fix your Shopify store. Media buying and creative production are separate responsibilities. Some providers include both, so confirm who researches, briefs, produces and launches the ads. And no media buyer can fix a weak offer from inside Ads Manager. If the product page or the price is the problem, the account will keep saying so no matter who runs it.
Three signs yours is not doing the job
You do not need to understand Ads Manager to check whether the week above is happening in your account. Three checks:
- Unexplained inactivity. Ask why budgets and creative stayed unchanged, and what evidence supported that choice. Holding a profitable setup steady can be deliberate.
- Unexplained losses. Ask why an ad remains active above the agreed cost limit and what further evidence the operator is waiting for.
- Reports that are screenshots. A dashboard export with no sentence about what changed, why, or what happens next means the thinking is being left to you, which is the one part you hired out.
If any of those hit, run the account through the Meta ads audit checklist before your next renewal, and compare what lands in your inbox on Fridays against what a useful weekly report looks like.
If this reads like your own job description
If you are doing these jobs yourself, record the time they require and which ones regularly slip. That helps define the help you need, whether it is account execution, creative strategy or both.
